A star journey from Jollywood to Bollywood- Supriya Kumari

The Indian state of Jharkhand has given many notable people in a variety of fields- M.S Dhoni, Deepika Kumari in sports, Priyanka Chopra, R. Madhavan, and Imtiaz Ali in cinema, Anjana Om Kashyap in Journalism, and many more. One such person is Supriya Kumari- from working as a child artist in Doordarshan to acting in Bollywood movies.

Supriya Kumari was born in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Her mother is a homemaker, and her father did a government job. She is the youngest among her four siblings. She completed her schooling at S.S Doronda Girls High School and did her graduation from St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi. She was interested in acting since her childhood. She worked as a child artist and performed at various shows as a dancer in Doordarshan. She is also a trained Kathak dancer and learned the Lucknow and Allahabad Gharana. 

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Shah Rukh Khan are her favorite actors.

She started her career by working in the Nagpuri Kortha album. A lot of people liked her work in the album. ‘Ae Mor Sajni’ and ‘Rang Bhare Badal Se’ became hit songs. Her chemistry with Bunty Singh and Ravan Gupta in the songs was also enjoyed by many people. Her latest Nagpuri Kortha albums were released on 21 July 2022 and 16 august 2022.  She then went to Mumbai to try her hands at acting. In 2009, she made her debut on television with T.V serial ‘Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya hi Kiyo’. After this, she did ‘Mata Ki Chowki’ in which her acting was appreciated by the audience. She also participated in Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan and Terrence Lewis.

After watching her work in T.V serials, she got offers to do Bollywood movies. She made her debut in Bollywood with the movie ‘Zindagi 50 50’ in 2013.  ‘21 Topo Ki Salami’ was her second Bollywood film and it was released in 2014. She said that she did not give auditions for the movies.

When asked about the difference she feels in working between T.V serials and movies, she said “both are different experiences. In a TV series, an actor works 14 hours per day. While working in movies, a schedule is made for the actors, and the character is played for a specific time frame”.

Talking about her learning, she said that she learns something new every day.

When asked what she would love to try in future, she said that she would love to host shows. She would also love to do comedy shows like The Kapil Sharma Show.
