समस्त गुमला जिला में वट सावित्री पूजा के अवसर पर शुक्रवार को जिला मुख्यालय सहित पूरे जिले के विभिन्न मंदिरों और वट (बरगद पेड़ों ) के समक्ष सोलह सिंगार किए हुए विवाहित महिलाओं द्वारा बट सावित्री पूजा कर अपने सुहाग के लिए मांगी लंबी उम्र, विवाहित महिलाओं की भारी भीड़ उमड़ पड़ी । सुहागिन महिलाओं ने 16 श्रृंगार कर वट वृक्ष की पूजा-अर्चना की और पति की लंबी आयु, की प्रार्थना करते हुए अपने अपने पतियों की मांगी लंबी उम्र और अच्छे स्वास्थ्य व घर परिवार के लिए सुख-समृद्धि की कामना की। सुबह से ही महिलाएं लाल-पीली साड़ियों में सज-धज कर पूजा की थाली लेकर वट वृक्ष के पास पहुंचने लगीं। महिलाओं ने बट वृक्ष( बरगद के पेड़ ) की परिक्रमा कर कच्चा लाल सूत लपेटा, मूली धागा, अक्षत, रोली, केला, सेव, नारंगी अंगूर आदि फल-फूल चढ़ाए और सावित्री-सत्यवान की कथा सुनी। पूरे दिन मंदिरों और सिंगर दुकानों, पूजा सामग्री दुकानों, मिठाई की दुकानों में भीड़ उम्र पड़ी थी, सभी चौक-चौराहों पर मेले जैसा माहौल देखा गया। विभिन्न मंदिरों के पंडित और आचार्य ने वट सावित्री पूजा ( कथा ) पर विशेष महत्व और प्रकाश डालते हुए बताया कि यह पर्व पति की दीर्घायु, अच्छे स्वास्थ्य और अखंड सौभाग्य की कामना के लिए किया जाता है। उन्होंने कहा कि पौराणिक मान्यता के अनुसार सावित्री ने अपने तप और पतिव्रत धर्म के बल पर यमराज से अपने पति सत्यवान के प्राण वापस ले लिए थे। तभी से सुहागिन महिलाएं वट वृक्ष को साक्षी मानकर पूजा करती हैं। वट वृक्ष दीर्घायु का प्रतीक है, इसलिए इसकी पूजा से पति को लंबी उम्र का आशीर्वाद मिलता है।
महिलाओं ने निर्जला व्रत रखकर पूरे विधि-विधान से पूजा संपन्न की। शाम को कथा श्रवण के बाद फलाहार कर व्रत का पारण किया गया। उक्त त्योहार को लेकर बाजारों में भी रौनक दिखी। पूजा सामग्री, चूड़ी, बिंदी और फलों की दुकानों पर खूब खरीदारी हुई।
