Karwa Chauth, a cherished one-day Hindu festival, beautifully symbolizes the deep love, devotion, and sacred commitment between a husband and wife.1 Predominantly celebrated in Northern India, the festival falls on the fourth day (Chaturthi) after the full moon (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Kartik (typically October or November).2
The very name is significant: Karwa refers to an earthen pot used in the rituals, and Chauth means the fourth day.3 Traditionally, married women observe a Nirjala Vrat—a strict fast without food or water—from sunrise until moonrise, praying for the longevity, well-being, and prosperity of their husbands.4 Unmarried women sometimes observe the fast, praying for an ideal partner.5
Rituals and Traditions
The day begins before dawn with Sargi, a pre-sunrise meal prepared by the mother-in-law for her daughter-in-law to sustain her through the long fast.6 Throughout the day, women prepare for the evening rituals, dressing up in vibrant, auspicious attire, often red or bridal colours, and adorning themselves with mehendi and the solah shringar (sixteen adornments).7
As the auspicious Puja Muhurat approaches in the evening, women gather to perform the rituals.8 They worship Goddess Parvati (Gauri Mata), an incarnation of strength and marital devotion, and listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha—the ritual story—which narrates tales of devotion like that of Queen Veeravati and Savitri, reinforcing the power of a wife’s unwavering faith.9
Breaking the Fast
The climactic moment arrives with the moonrise.10 Women climb to a vantage point, sight the moon through a decorated sieve (chalni), offer Arghya (water) to it using the Karwa pot, and then look at their husbands through the sieve.11 The husband then takes the water and food to break his wife’s fast, a tender act of reciprocation and devotion that marks the end of the day-long vow.12
In modern times, while the traditional essence remains, the festival has evolved into a celebration of mutual respect and companionship, with many husbands choosing to fast alongside their wives as a gesture of solidarity.13 Karwa Chauth is thus more than just a ritual; it is a vibrant expression of emotional strength, sacrifice, and the enduring beauty of marital love.14
