New Zealand have begun a fresh chapter in their T20I journey

New Zealand have begun a fresh chapter in their T20I journey as they take on West Indies in the opening match of the five-game series at Auckland’s Eden Park. With Mitchell Santner leading the side following Kane Williamson’s retirement from T20Is, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bowl first, hoping to make early inroads under clear skies.

The hosts are determined to bounce back after disappointing home series losses to England and Australia, both heavily disrupted by rain. However, their preparations have been impacted by several key injuries. Opener Finn Allen, wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert, and express pacer Lockie Ferguson are all sidelined, forcing reshuffles in the playing XI. The much-awaited return of towering seamer Kyle Jamieson, who has recovered from a side strain, offers welcome relief for New Zealand’s pace attack. Devon Conway will take up the wicketkeeping duties for this match.

West Indies enter the series with renewed confidence, having swept Bangladesh 3-0 after a shock defeat to Nepal. The Caribbean side will aim to maintain their winning momentum across this extensive tour, which includes T20Is, ODIs, and Tests. Their squad received a boost with the return of pace bowler Matthew Forde from a shoulder injury, replacing Khary Pierre. However, middle-order batter Sherfane Rutherford has been ruled out of the opening match due to illness.

With the T20 World Cup just three months away, both teams view this series as a critical testing ground. Eden Park’s notoriously short boundaries promise a high-scoring affair, though Decision Review System (DRS) will not be in use due to technical issues.

New Zealand XI: Tim Robinson, Devon Conway (wk), Rachin Ravindra, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner (capt), Zakary Foulkes, Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy.

West Indies XI: Shai Hope (capt, wk), Alick Athanaze, Brandon King, Roston Chase, Ackeem Auguste, Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Romario Shepherd, Matthew Forde, Akeal Hosein, Jayden Seales.
