Asia Cup 2025: Sri Lanka Beat Afghanistan by 6 Wickets

On September 18, 2025, Sri Lanka registered a thumping six-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the Asia Cup clash. The match held great importance for both teams, as a win could significantly ease their path to the semifinals.

Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first. Their start was promising, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz scoring a fluent half-century and Ibrahim Zadran playing a steady knock. However, Sri Lankan bowlers bounced back strongly in the middle overs. Apart from the top order, no other Afghan batter could convert starts into big scores. The team eventually folded for 238 runs in the 47th over. Wanindu Hasaranga and Dilshan Madushanka shone with the ball, picking up three wickets each.

Chasing 239, Sri Lanka lost a few early wickets but stayed composed. Opener Pathum Nissanka anchored the innings with a well-constructed half-century. Kusal Mendis added crucial momentum with a fine 67-run knock. Later, Charith Asalanka and skipper Dasun Shanaka played attacking cricket, guiding their side to victory. Sri Lanka chased down the target in the 46th over, finishing at 239/4.

With this win, Sri Lanka strengthened their position on the points table and kept their semifinal hopes alive. For Afghanistan, however, the defeat came as a major setback.

Speaking after the match, Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka praised his side, saying, “Our bowling was excellent, and the batters showed great composure. That’s the real strength of this team.” Afghan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi admitted that the lack of big partnerships in the middle overs cost them the game.

The thrilling win brought celebrations for Sri Lankan fans, as their team showcased both solid bowling and balanced batting. With the race to the semifinals heating up, all eyes are now on the upcoming matches to see which teams advance further in the tournament.

👉 Overall, the contest highlighted quality performances with both bat and ball, but Sri Lanka’s all-round balance ultimately secured them a commanding six-wicket win over Afghanistan in the Asia Cup.
