WhatsApp Call Forwarding Scam: Courier Calls Used to Hijack Accounts, Victims Lose Money

New WhatsApp Scam you need to know

Ranchi: A new cyber fraud involving fake courier delivery calls and WhatsApp account takeovers has raised concerns after several people reportedly fell victim to the scam. In some cases, fraudsters allegedly took control of victims’ WhatsApp accounts and sent messages requesting money from their contact lists.

According to accounts shared by victims, the scam often begins after placing an online order. The victim receives a call from someone claiming to be a courier delivery agent, who says the delivery person is unable to reach them and asks them to call another number.

After calling the number, victims reportedly find their mobile phones suddenly disconnected or unable to receive calls. Subsequently, messages seeking money, often accompanied by QR codes, are sent to their WhatsApp contacts. Some recipients, believing the requests came from people they knew, reportedly transferred money.

The suspected modus operandi involves tricking victims into activating call forwarding, potentially allowing fraudsters to intercept verification calls and gain access to WhatsApp accounts.

How to Stay Safe

Cybersecurity experts advise users to remain cautious of unexpected courier calls and avoid calling unfamiliar numbers provided by unknown callers.

Users should also:

  • Never share WhatsApp OTPs or verification codes.
  • Enable WhatsApp two-step verification through Settings → Account.
  • Add a recovery email and regularly check linked devices.
  • Check call-forwarding settings and disable any forwarding they did not activate.
  • Verify money requests directly with the person concerned.

If an account is compromised, users should attempt to register their number again on WhatsApp using the SMS verification code.

Anyone who loses money to cyber fraud should immediately call 1930 or report the incident at cybercrime.gov.in.

People are urged to stay alert and share this warning to help prevent further financial losses.
