पूर्व अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति अब्राहम लिंकन की यह चिट्ठी- जो एक ऐतिहासिक दस्तावेज है, उसे पढ़कर अपने बच्चों को जरूर सुनाएं,इसमें मेरा भी व्यक्तिगत लाभ है, हर बच्चा जब बेहतर सोच का बच्चा होगा तो इससे दुनिया खूबसूरत बनेगी और हर व्यक्ति जो कुछ भी इस दुनिया में कर रहा है उसका अंतिम लक्ष्य दुनिया का बेहतर होना ही है।”सम्माननीय गुरूजी,मैं अपने पुत्र को शिक्षा के लिए आपके हाथों सौंप रहा हूँ. आपसे मेरी उम्मीद यही है कि इसे ऐसी शिक्षा दें जिससे यह सच्चा इंसान बन सके. मैं जानता हूं कि इस दुनिया में सारे लोग अच्छे, सच्चे और न्यायप्रिय नहीं होते. न ही सब सच बोलते हैं. यह तो मेरा बच्चा कभी-न-कभी सीख ही लेगा. लेकिन उसे यह जरूर बताएं कि हर बुरे आदमी के पास भी अच्छा हृदय होता है. अगर स्वार्थी राजनीतिज्ञ हैं तो जनता के हित में काम करने वाले देशप्रेमी भी हैं. मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप उसे सिखाएँ कि हर दुश्मन के अंदर एक दोस्त बनने की संभावना भी होती है. मैं जानता हूं कि उसे ये बातें सीखने में समय लगेगा, लेकिन आप उसे सिखाइए कि मेहनत से कमाया गया एक रुपया, सड़क पर मिलने वाले पांच रुपये के नोट से ज्यादा कीमती होता है.आप उसे हारना सिखाएं और जीत में खुश होना भी सिखाएं, हो सके तो उसे राग-द्वेष से दूर रखें और उसे अपनी मुसीबतों को हंसकर टालना सिखाएं. वह जल्दी से जल्दी यह सब सीखे कि बदमाशों को आसानी से काबू में किया जा सकता है. दयालु लोगों के साथ नम्रता से पेश आना और बुरे लोगों के साथ सख्ती से पेश आना चाहिए. मुझे उम्मीद है कि आप उसे बता पाएँगे कि दूसरों को धमकाना और डराना कोई अच्छी बात नहीं है. यह काम करने से उसे दूर रहना चाहिए.अगर संभव हो तो उसे किताबों की मनमोहक दुनिया में जरूर ले जाएं. साथ-साथ उसे प्रकृति की सुंदरता, नीले आसमान से उड़ते आजाद पक्षी, सुनहरी धूप में गुनगुनाती मधुमक्खियां और पहाड़ के ढलानों पर खिलखिलाते जंगली फूलों की हंसी को भी निहारने दें. स्कूल में उसे सिखाएं कि नक़ल करके पास होने से फेल होना बेहतर है. मैं समझता हूं कि ये बातें उसके लिए ज्यादा काम की हैं. चाहे सभी लोग उसे गलत कहें, लेकिन वह अपने विचारों में पक्का विश्वास रखें और उन पर अडिग रहे. दूसरों की सारी बातें सुनने के बाद उसमें से काम की चीजों का चुनाव उसे इन्हीं दिनों में सीखना होगा.जब सब लोग भेड़ों की तरह एक ही रास्ते पर चल रहे हों, तो उसमें भीड़ से अलग होकर अपना रास्ता बनाने की हिम्मत हो. उसे सिखाएं कि वह हर बात को धैर्यपूर्वक सुने फिर उसे सत्य की कसौटी पर कसे और केवल अच्छाई को ही ग्रहण करे.आप उसे बताना मत भूलिएगा कि उदासी को किस तरह प्रसन्नता में बदला जा सकता है. उसे यह भी बताइएगा कि जब कभी रोने का मन करे तो रोने में शर्म बिल्कुल ना करे. वह आलोचकों को नजरअंदाज करे और चाटुकारों से सावधान रहे. वह अपने शरीर की ताकत के बूते पर भरपूर कमाई करे, लेकिन अपनी आत्मा और ईमान को कभी न बेचे. उसमें शक्ति हो कि चिल्लाती भीड़ के सामने भी खड़ा होकर, अपने सत्य के लिए जूझता रहे. आप उसे ऐसी सीख दें कि मानव जाति पर उसकी असीम श्रद्धा बनी रहे. मेरा सोचना है कि उसे खुद पर विश्वास होना चाहिए और दूसरों पर भी. तभी तो वह एक अच्छा इंसान बन पाएगा. ये बातें बड़ी हैं और लंबी भी. लेकिन आप इनमें से जितना भी उसे बता पाएं उतना उसके लिए अच्छा होगा. फिर अभी मेरा बेटा बहुत छोटा है और बहुत प्यारा भी.मैंने अपने पत्र में बहुत कुछ लिखा है. देखें इसमें से क्या करना संभव है…”आपकाअब्राहम लिंकन
