Mild Earthquake Jolts Jharkhand and Bihar: People Rush Out of Their Homes in Panic

Ranchi/Patna, August 26, 2024 – Residents of Jharkhand and Bihar experienced a late-night scare as a mild earthquake struck the region, causing tremors that left people rushing out of their homes in panic. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 3.9 on the Richter scale, was felt around 12:40 AM on Monday. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or damage to property.

Tremors Felt Across Multiple Districts

The National Center for Seismology reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was in Pakur, Jharkhand, at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface. The tremors were felt in several districts across Jharkhand, including Dumka, Deoghar, Sahibganj, and Ramgarh. In Bihar, parts of Bhagalpur also reported the tremors. Although the quake was of low intensity, it was enough to create widespread concern, particularly because it occurred during the night when most people were asleep.

Midnight Panic as Residents Flee Homes

The timing of the earthquake amplified the fear among residents. Many were jolted awake by the sudden shaking and immediately ran outdoors in search of safety. “We were fast asleep when we felt the ground shaking. The entire building swayed for a few seconds, and we didn’t want to take any chances,” said a resident of Dumka. Similar scenes were witnessed in Pakur, where people huddled in open spaces, waiting anxiously for any aftershocks.

In Bhagalpur, Bihar, residents described a similar situation. The tremors, though brief, were strong enough to cause alarm. People were seen gathering outside their homes, discussing the unexpected event while trying to calm down frightened children and elders.

Authorities Monitor the Situation

Seismologists have confirmed that the earthquake was a minor one, with no significant damage expected. The local administration in the affected districts was quick to assess the situation, with no immediate reports of injury or destruction. “We are closely monitoring the situation. Thankfully, there’s been no harm reported, but we urge residents to remain cautious,” said an official from the Jharkhand Disaster Management Department.

Earthquake Centered in Pakur

According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake’s epicenter was located in Pakur, a district in northeastern Jharkhand. The tremors were shallow, originating just 10 kilometers below the surface, which likely contributed to the quake being felt across a relatively wide area despite its moderate magnitude.

No Major Losses, But Fear Lingers

Although the tremors did not cause any significant damage, the psychological impact on the residents was evident. The suddenness of the event, combined with the timing, led to a sleepless night for many. “It’s not about the intensity; it’s about the fear that grips you when you suddenly feel the ground beneath your feet shaking,” shared a local from Deoghar.

This incident serves as a reminder that even minor quakes can cause considerable anxiety, particularly in regions that are not regularly affected by seismic activity.

A Region Prone to Moderate Seismic Activity

While the eastern part of India, including Jharkhand and Bihar, is not located in high-risk seismic zones, the area is susceptible to occasional low-to-moderate intensity earthquakes. Experts stress the importance of staying prepared for such events, as even mild quakes can have unpredictable consequences.

As residents return to their daily routines, the incident has prompted discussions on earthquake preparedness and the importance of quick response measures in the event of future tremors.
