A Landmark Step for Working Women — Karnataka Shows the Way

Today, Karnataka has set a powerful example for the entire nation by becoming the first Indian state to introduce paid menstrual leave for all women in the formal sector, including those working in private companies.

This is not just a policy.
It is compassion in action.
It is the government saying, “We see you. We respect you. We stand with you.”

For decades, millions of working women have silently powered India’s growth while pushing through discomfort, pain, and challenges that often go unseen and unspoken. With this decision, Karnataka has acknowledged a biological reality that society has traditionally ignored — and it has done so with empathy, dignity and courage.

The new policy allows women aged 18 to 52 to take one day of menstrual leave each month, without the burden of presenting a medical certificate. The leave cannot be carried forward, but its impact will be felt every single month by the nearly 3.5 to 4 lakh women in the state’s formal workforce, from IT professionals to factory workers.

While Bihar and Odisha have provisions for government employees, and Kerala offers it in universities and training institutes, Karnataka’s decision stands out because it embraces the entire formal sector — including private companies. This is bold, progressive policymaking that places women’s health and well-being at the centre of workforce reforms.

Globally, nations like Spain, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia have taken similar steps. Today, Karnataka joins that league of forward-thinking regions prioritising genuine employee welfare.

This is a moment of pride.
A moment that signals a more inclusive, humane and modern India.
I wholeheartedly applaud the Karnataka government for leading with sensitivity and vision.

Here’s hoping many more states — and companies — follow this extraordinary example.
