पिपरवार, 1 जनवरी खरसावां में शहीद हुए आदिवासियों के लिए एक श्रद्धांजलि सभा लुकइया एवं कुसुम टोला हेंजदा में बालेश्वर उरांव की अध्यक्षता में किया गया सर्वप्रथम शहीद बेदी पर पुष्प माला अर्पित कर श्रद्धांजलि दी गयी। महेंद्र उरांव ने कहा कि जब भारत देश अंग्रेजी हुकूमत से 15 अगस्त 1947 को आजाद हुआ तब हमारे देश विभिन्न रियासतों में बंटा हुआ था और सभी को मिलाकर तीन रियासतों में बनाई जा रही थी और झारखंड के कुछ हिस्सों को उड़ीसा में विलय करने की भी प्रक्रिया हो रही थी तभी आदिवासियों द्वारा अलग राज्य की भी मांग चल रही थी और उस समय के आदिवासियों के नेतृत्वकर्ता जयपाल सिंह मुंडा ने एक जनवरी 1948 को खरसावां हाट मैं एक सभा करने की सारी तैयारी हो चुकी थी लोग दो-तीन दिन की पैदल यात्रा कर साथ में ‘भोजन की व्यवस्था कर एक जनवरी को खरसावां हॉट पहुंचे लेकिन कुछ लोगों को
आदिवासियों की यह आंदोलन मंजूर नहीं थी और एक जनवरी को जयपाल सिंह मुंडा को नजर बंद कर दिया गया और वह खरसावां हॉट नहीं पहुंच सके और पुलिस के जवानों द्वारा पचास हजार की संख्या में जुटे आदिवासियों पर अंधाधुंध गोलीबारी कर मार डाला गया। बहुत से शवों को वही एक कुएं में डाल दिया गया और बहुत लाशों को ट्रक
द्वारा जंगलों में फेंक दिया गया। आज के दिन एक जनवरी को वहां मातम मनाया जाता है। कहा की कितने आदिवासी शहीद हुए आज भी एक रहस्य है। इस कार्यक्रम में मुख्य रूप से महेंद्र उरांव, बहुरा मुंडा, बालेश्वर उरांव, विजय उरांव, सुरेश उरांव, रामकुमार उरांव, सहदेव उरांव, बाजे उरांव, प्रदीप उरांव, संतोष उरांव, उपेंद्र उरांव, अर्जुन उरांव, समुदाय के लोग शामिल हुए।
