Prior to the G20 Summit, Modi and Biden will hold a bilateral meeting on September 8

  • In addition to attending the G20 Summit in India, US President Joe Biden will also meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a private setting on September 8 before the historic gathering. The White House made the announcement on Saturday.
  • The G20 Summit, which is planned to take place in New Delhi on September 9 and 10, will be hosted by India, the G20 President.
  • According to the White House, Biden will thank PM Modi for leading the G20 during the Summit.
  • “The President will fly to New Delhi, India, on Thursday, September 7, to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit. The President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet in private on Friday, according to a statement from the White House.
  • While in New Delhi, the President will also praise Prime Minister Modi’s G20 leadership and reiterate US support for the G20 as the foremost forum for economic cooperation, including by hosting it in 2026, according to the statement.
  • As well as increasing the ability of multilateral development banks, such as the World Bank, to more effectively combat poverty, among other things by addressing global challenges, both presidents are anticipated to debate the economic and social effects of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.
  • On September 10, following the G20 Summit, Biden is slated to go to Hanoi, Vietnam.
  • According to the White House, both presidents will work to lessen the negative economic and social effects of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine and boost the ability of multilateral development institutions, such as the World Bank, to more effectively combat poverty, including by tackling global issues.
  • While in New Delhi, the President will also praise Prime Minister Modi’s G20 leadership and reiterate US support for the G20 as the foremost forum for economic cooperation, including by hosting it in 2026, according to the statement.
  • The G20 is an intergovernmental grouping of the world’s principal industrialised and developing nations. Along with the European Union (EU), the bloc also includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, UK, and the United States. This season, the visiting nations are Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates.
  • A large number of G20 leaders, including Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and French President Emmanuel Macron, have already indicated that they will attend the summit.
  • According to PTI on Thursday, the chances of Chinese President Xi Jinping being present in person at the G20 conference on September 9 and 10 are “very low” although India has not yet received any confirmation of his attendance.
  • Premier Li Qiang from China could make the trip to the meeting in New Delhi.
  • Among the G20 leaders who have confirmed their attendance at the summit are Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and others.
