President Droupadi Murmu Condemns Kolkata Rape Case, Urges for Societal Introspection

President Droupadi Murmu has expressed deep concern over the horrific rape and murder of a young doctor in Kolkata, emphasizing that such acts of barbarity have no place in a civilized society. Her remarks come amid widespread protests in the city, where students, doctors, and concerned citizens have taken to the streets demanding justice and safety for women.

President Murmu voiced her grief over the pervasive issue of sexual violence, highlighting the urgent need for society to address these crimes collectively. “It has been 12 years since the Nirbhaya gang rape shook the nation, yet we continue to witness countless incidents of sexual violence,” she said, noting that society’s tendency to forget these tragedies is deeply troubling.

She stressed the importance of collective action in tackling violence against women, calling for a national introspection. “We must confront these issues without bias and find answers to some very difficult questions,” President Murmu stated. She pointed out that a “distorted mindset” often views women as inferior—less powerful, less capable, and less intelligent—a mentality that must be challenged and changed.

Even as protests continue in Kolkata, the President warned that criminals are still at large, poised to commit further atrocities. She called for immediate and sustained efforts to prevent such crimes and to ensure that women can live in safety and dignity. “We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to these heinous acts any longer,” she concluded, urging all citizens to join in the fight against gender-based violence.

This strong condemnation from the President underscores the need for both societal and governmental reforms to protect women from such brutal acts. As the nation mourns another senseless tragedy, her words serve as a reminder that true progress will only be achieved when every woman feels safe and valued in society.
