Jamtara Cyber Gang Busted for ₹11 Crore High-Tech Fraud Using AI and Malware

Ranchi, Jharkhand:

Cybercrime in Jharkhand’s Jamtara district has taken a sophisticated turn, with fraudsters now deploying artificial intelligence and malware instead of traditional phone scams. In a major crackdown, Jharkhand Police have arrested six members of a cyber gang accused of orchestrating frauds worth ₹11 crore across India through malicious mobile applications.

According to police, the gang targeted over 2,500 bank account holders nationwide, developing APK files disguised as official government and banking apps. The fake apps bore names such as PM Kisan Yojna.apk, PM Fasal Bima Yojna.apk, and imitations of major Indian banks including State Bank of India, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank, Axis Bank, and NPCI International.

Once installed, these malware-laced applications gave the criminals full control over victims’ smartphones, allowing them to steal sensitive banking data and drain accounts—without requiring OTPs. Data from around 2,000 Punjab National Bank customers and 500 Canara Bank customers was found on the gang’s devices, indicating targeted attacks on specific banks.

The group, operating under the pseudonym “DK Boss,” was also selling these malicious APKs to other cyber criminals for ₹20,000–₹25,000 each. Police revealed the gang leveraged AI tools, including ChatGPT, for malware development and Android software programming.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Mahboob Alam (25), Safauddin Ansari (26), Md Aarif Ansari (27), Jashim Ansari (30), SK Belal (27), and Ajay Mandal (28). Four of them have prior criminal records in cybercrime cases.

A senior police official explained that the malware was primarily distributed via WhatsApp messages, tricking recipients into downloading the harmful APKs. “Once installed, the victims’ phones were compromised instantly,” the official said.

The police are now investigating interstate connections of the gang and have sought assistance from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center, under the Union Home Ministry, to trace the wider network of APK-based fraud operations.
