Old Wine, New Bottle? Sharad Kelkar’s ‘Tum Se Tum Tak’ Faces Claims of Copying Sony TV’s Classic ‘Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin’

MUMBAI: Just weeks after its debut, Sharad Kelkar’s new Zee TV daily soap, ‘Tum Se Tum Tak’, is not only making headlines for its controversial 27-year age gap premise but is now facing a new wave of speculation: is the show an unacknowledged copy of the beloved early 2000s hit, Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin?

The popular Zee TV series, which features Kelkar as the affluent, middle-aged businessman Aryavardhan, and Niharika Chouksey as the young, naïve employee Anu, has a central plot revolving around an unlikely romance blossoming in the workplace. This core dynamic has triggered a debate among fans who see parallels with the classic Sony TV show that originally broke the mould of Indian television.

Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin (JJKN) captivated audiences for years with the journey of Jasmeet ‘Jassi’ Walia—an intelligent but conventionally ‘unattractive’ secretary—and her complicated relationship with her handsome, elite boss, Armaan Suri. The show’s entire arc was defined by Jassi’s transformation from the ‘ugly duckling’ to a beautiful swan, and the corporate sabotage she faced.

However, industry observers and fans are quick to point out that the resemblance may only be skin-deep. While both series share the “rich-boss-poor-employee-romance” trope, the defining conflict for Tum Se Tum Tak is the significant age disparity and the inherent power imbalance that comes with it.

“The core DNA is different,” noted one media analyst. “JJKN was a faithful adaptation of Yo soy Betty, la fea, focusing on a physical and professional makeover narrative. Tum Se Tum Tak, on the other hand, is widely rumoured to be a television adaptation of the popular Marathi series Tula Pahate Re, where the tension is squarely placed on the age difference and a past mystery involving the male lead.”

While a final verdict on originality awaits the unfolding of the full storyline, for now, the debate highlights the fact that few new office romances in Hindi television can escape comparison to the legendary Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin. The makers of Tum Se Tum Tak have yet to officially respond to the copying allegations, leaving the audience to judge whether the show is truly a fresh narrative or merely an old classic in a modern frame.
