Titans Fire Coach Brian Callahan After Disappointing 1-5 Start

The Tennessee Titans have made a swift coaching change, firing head coach Brian Callahan just six games into his second season following a disappointing 1-5 start. Callahan’s tenure ends with a dismal 4-19 overall record, putting him second to only Ken Whisenhunt for the worst head coaching record in franchise history.

The decision comes after the Titans failed to show “sufficient growth,” according to a statement from president of football operations Chad Brinker. “While we are committed to a patient and strategic plan… we have not demonstrated sufficient growth,” Brinker stated. “Our players, fans, and community deserve a football team that achieves a standard we are not currently meeting.”

Callahan, hired in 2023 after the firing of successful former coach Mike Vrabel, oversaw a challenging 3-14 first season. That season, however, landed the team the No. 1 overall pick, which they used to select quarterback Cam Ward. Unfortunately for Callahan, Ward’s rookie season began in turmoil. Callahan’s firing marks a notable trend: six of the last eight, and the last four, No. 1 overall quarterbacks have seen their head coaches dismissed during their rookie years.

Frustration has been mounting among the Titans faithful. The team’s offense has struggled mightily, scoring only 83 points through six games—the franchise’s fewest since 1985. Week 3’s 41-20 home loss to the Indianapolis Colts saw fans booing the team and chanting “Fire Callahan.”

The coach attempted to stave off the inevitable by handing over playcalling duties to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree last month, but the team immediately followed with a crushing 26-0 shutout loss to the Houston Texans in Week 4. That game prompted Ward to vent his frustration post-game, stating, “If we keeping it a buck right now, we’re ass.”

Callahan did manage one fleeting victory last week—a 22-21 comeback win against the Cardinals, who blew an 18-point lead. However, a frustrating 20-10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday sealed his fate. It was the Titans’ fourth double-digit loss of the season, the most in the NFL.

The Titans have yet to name an interim coach. The change in leadership comes just ahead of a highly anticipated Week 7 matchup this Sunday, when former coach Mike Vrabel returns to Nissan Stadium with his new team, the New England Patriots, whom he currently has in second place in the AFC East.
