Network outage impacts users across Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai as Google reroutes traffic following emergency shutdown

New Delhi: A fire at a data centre facility in New Delhi triggered an emergency shutdown of critical network equipment used by Google Cloud, causing service disruptions and connectivity issues for customers across several Indian cities.

Google Cloud, one of the world’s largest cloud service providers alongside Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, confirmed that the incident resulted in reduced network capacity and intermittent service degradation in multiple metropolitan regions.

According to Google’s Service Health dashboard, the incident was officially recorded at 11:22 a.m. Pacific Time on June 9 (approximately 11:52 p.m. IST). However, the company has not disclosed the exact time when the fire occurred.

Google stated that the fire led to an emergency power shutdown at its New Delhi facility, isolating a local Point of Presence (PoP) — a critical network hub that connects users and internet traffic through routers, servers, and high-speed network infrastructure.

The outage significantly reduced network capacity in and around the Delhi region and affected traffic originating from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and nearby areas.

“Network traffic to Google Cloud originating from Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and surrounding areas is experiencing intermittent periods of elevated latency and possible packet loss,” the company said in a statement.

To minimize the impact, Google rerouted a substantial amount of traffic away from the affected facility. However, the sudden shift increased demand on other network routes, resulting in intermittent latency spikes and connectivity issues across several Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

The disruption affected numerous businesses and websites relying on Google Cloud infrastructure. Among those impacted was The Wire’s English website, which reportedly experienced an outage lasting nearly 12 hours.

Google has not yet provided details regarding the cause of the fire or the full extent of the damage. The company continues to monitor the situation while working to restore normal network performance across affected regions.
