HCLTech Bets Big on AI: ₹3,500 Crore Data Centre Investment Signals New Era for Indian IT

New Delhi: HCLTech has announced plans to invest up to ₹3,500 crore in AI-focused data centres with an initial capacity that can scale up to 50 megawatts (MW). The move marks the Noida-based IT giant’s entry into the data centre business, reflecting the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) computing, cloud infrastructure, and sovereign data capabilities across enterprises and government organizations.

The announcement comes alongside a strong financial performance, with the company reporting record first-quarter deal wins worth $2.4 billion, highlighting robust demand for AI-driven digital transformation services.

However, the expansion into AI infrastructure coincides with a significant workforce reduction. During the same quarter, HCLTech reported a net decline of more than 3,000 employees, marking its steepest quarterly staff reduction in nearly two years. The contrasting developments underscore a major shift in the IT services industry.

Traditionally, IT companies expanded by hiring more employees to execute client projects. Today, the focus is shifting toward AI platforms, automation, cloud computing, proprietary technologies, and high-performance data infrastructure, enabling companies to generate greater revenue with fewer resources.

Industry experts believe HCLTech’s investment represents more than a business expansion—it reflects the evolution of Indian IT from a labour-intensive outsourcing model to an AI-powered technology ecosystem. The company is positioning itself further up the AI value chain by investing in infrastructure, compute capacity, managed AI services, and enterprise transformation solutions.

The investment also follows HCLTech’s reported $150 million investment in Sarvam AI, reinforcing its ambition to become a comprehensive AI services provider rather than just an implementation partner.

For India’s technology ecosystem, the move sends a clear message: the next phase of IT growth will be driven by AI infrastructure, intelligent platforms, and advanced computing capabilities. The industry’s future success may no longer be measured by campus hiring alone, but by its ability to build powerful AI infrastructure, develop cutting-edge models, and improve operational efficiency
