हिंदी भावार्थ:
हे माँ, मैं तुम्हें प्रणाम करता हूँ!
(तुम) अच्छे जल से भरी हुई हो,
फलों से समृद्ध हो,
मलयाचल (दक्षिण) की शीतल हवा से ठंडी हो,
हरी-भरी फसलों से श्यामल हो,
हे माँ!
मैं तुम्हें प्रणाम करता हूँ!
तुम्हारी रातें चाँदनी से पुलकित और आनंदमय हैं,
खिले हुए फूलों और वृक्षों की डालियों से तुम सुशोभित हो,
तुम्हारी मुस्कान सुन्दर है और वाणी मधुर है,
तुम सुख देने वाली और वरदान देने वाली हो,
हे माँ!
मैं तुम्हें प्रणाम करता हूँ!

बंकिम चंद्र चट्टोपाध्याय द्वारा रचित इस गीत का सबसे पहले 1875 में बंगाली साहित्यिक पत्रिका ‘बंगदर्शन’ में प्रकाशन हुआ था। बाद में, इसे 1882 में प्रसिद्ध उपन्यास ‘आनंदमठ’ में भी शामिल किया गया था। इस गीत ने भारत माता को एक भौगोलिक इकाई की बजाय एक देवी के रूप में प्रस्तुत कर औपनिवेशिक शासन के विरुद्ध राष्ट्रवाद की भावना के पुनर्जागरण को प्रबलता दिया था और यह गीत भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम की आत्मा और प्रेरणा का प्रतीक बन गया। 1905 के बंगाल विभाजन के विरुद्ध यह स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों का रणघोष बन गया था। कालांतर में बंदे मातरम् का यह नारा पूरे भारत में विरोध और सामूहिक एकता का प्रतीक बन गया। और इसीलिए ब्रिटिश शासन ने कई स्थानों पर इसके सार्वजनिक गायन को प्रतिबंधित कर दिया गया था।
गुरुदेव रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर ने 1896 में कलकत्ता में हुए भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के अधिवेशन में अपने स्वर में इसे गाया था।आजादी के बाद, 24 जनवरी 1950 को देश की संविधान सभा ने स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में इसकी ऐतिहासिक भूमिका के लिए इसे राष्ट्रीय गीत के रूप में अपनाया। डॉ. राजेंद्र प्रसाद ने घोषणा की कि इस गीत को राष्ट्रीय गान “जन गण मन” के समान ही सम्मान प्राप्त होगा।
संविधान के अनुच्छेद 51 A के अंतर्गत स्वतंत्रता के लिए हमारे राष्ट्रीय संघर्ष को प्रेरित करने वाले महान आदर्शों को संजोना और उनका पालन करना एक मौलिक कर्तव्य है। अर्थात अब बंदे मातरम् राष्ट्र और राज्य के मूल कर्तव्य बोध का भी उद्घोष है।
