हॉकी के जादूगर : ध्यानचन्द

कोई समय था, जब भारतीय हॉकी का पूरे विश्व में दबदबा था। उसका श्रेय जिन्हें जाता है, उन मेजर ध्यानचन्द का जन्म प्रयाग, उत्तर प्रदेश में 29 अगस्त, 1905 को हुआ था। उनके पिता सेना में सूबेदार थे। उन्होंने 16 साल की अवस्था में ध्यानचन्द को भी सेना में भर्ती करा दिया। वहाँ वे कुश्ती में बहुत रुचि लेते थे; पर सूबेदार मेजर बाले तिवारी ने उन्हें हॉकी के लिए प्रेरित किया। इसके बाद तो वे और हॉकी एक दूसरे के पर्याय बन गये।वे कुछ दिन बाद ही अपनी रेजिमेण्ट की टीम में चुन लिये गये। उनका मूल नाम ध्यानसिंह था; पर वे प्रायः चाँदनी रात में अकेले घण्टों तक हॉकी का अभ्यास करते रहते थे। इससे उनके साथी तथा सेना के अधिकारी उन्हें ‘चाँद’ कहने लगे। फिर तो यह उनके नाम के साथ ऐसा जुड़ा कि वे ध्यानसिंह से ध्यानचन्द हो गये। आगे चलकर वे ‘दद्दा’ ध्यानचन्द कहलाने लगे।चार साल तक ध्यानचन्द अपनी रेजिमेण्ट की टीम में रहे। 1926 में वे सेना एकादश और फिर राष्ट्रीय टीम में चुन लिये गये। इसी साल भारतीय टीम ने न्यूजीलैण्ड का दौरा किया। इस दौरे में पूरे विश्व ने उनकी अद्भुत प्रतिभा को देखा। गेंद उनके पास आने के बाद फिर किसी अन्य खिलाड़ी तक नहीं जा पाती थी। कई बार उनकी हॉकी की जाँच की गयी, कि उसमें गोंद तो नहीं लगी है। अनेक बार खेल के बीच में उनकी हॉकी बदली गयी; पर वे तो अभ्यास के धनी थे। वे उल्टी हॉकी से भी उसी कुशलता से खेल लेते थे। इसीलिए उन्हें लोग हॉकी का जादूगर’ कहते थे।भारत ने सर्वप्रथम 1928 के एम्सटर्डम ओलम्पिक में भाग लिया। ध्यानचन्द भी इस दल में थे। इससे पूर्व इंग्लैण्ड ही हॉकी का स्वर्ण जीतता था; पर इस बार भारत से हारने के भय से उसने हॉकी प्रतियोगिता में भाग ही नहीं लिया। भारत ने इसमें स्वर्ण पदक जीता। 1936 के बर्लिन ओलम्पिक के समय उन्हें भारतीय दल का कप्तान बनाया गया। इसमें भी भारत ने स्वर्ण जीता। इसके बाद 1948 के ओलम्पिक में भारतीय दल ने कुल 29 गोल किये थे। इनमें से 15 अकेले ध्यानचन्द के ही थे। इन तीन ओलम्पिक में उन्होंने 12 मैचों में 38 गोल किये।1936 के बर्लिन ओलम्पिक के तैयारी खेलों में जर्मनी ने भारत को 4-1 से हरा दिया था। फाइनल के समय फिर से दोनों टीमों की भिड़न्त हुई। प्रथम भाग में दोनों टीम 1-1 से बराबरी पर थीं। मध्यान्तर में ध्यानचन्द ने सब खिलाड़ियों को तिरंगा झण्डा दिखाकर प्रेरित किया। इससे सबमें जोश भर गया और उन्होंने धड़ाधड़ सात गोल कर डाले। इस प्रकार भारत 8-1 से विजयी हुआ। उस दिन 15 अगस्त था। कौन जानता था कि 11 साल बाद इसी दिन भारतीय तिरंगा पूरी शान से देश भर में फहरा उठेगा।1926 से 1948 तक ध्यानचन्द दुनिया में जहाँ भी हॉकी खेलने गये, वहाँ दर्शक उनकी कलाइयों का चमत्कार देखने के लिए उमड़ आते थे। आस्ट्रिया की राजधानी वियना के एक स्टेडियम में उनकी प्रतिमा ही स्थापित कर दी गयी। 42 वर्ष की अवस्था में उन्होंने अन्तरराष्ट्रीय हॉकी से संन्यास ले लिया। कुछ समय वे राष्ट्रीय खेल संस्थान में हॉकी के प्रशिक्षक भी रहे।भारत के इस महान सपूत को शासन ने 1956 में ‘पद्मभूषण’ से सम्मानित किया। 3 दिसम्बर, 1979 को उनका देहान्त हुआ। उनका जन्मदिवस 29 अगस्त भारत में ‘खेल दिवस’ के रूप में मनाया जाता है।
