1630 ईसवी की एक शाम। निन्गो बंदरगाह, चीन

तट की तरफ़ जाने वाली संकरी गलियाँ खचा-खच भरी हैं। यात्री, व्यापारी, फेरीवाले, भिखारी, चोर, आवारा लोग इस भीड़ का हिस्सा हैं। कई ठेलों पर चूल्हे जला कर भोजन बनाया जा रहा है। कुछ बाँस के बने पट्टों पर किताबें लटकी हैं। रोचक गल्प भी हैं, प्रेरक पुस्तकें भी। कुछ बौद्ध भिक्षु राहगीरों को बिठा कर कथाएँ सुना रहे हैं। कुछ वैद्य अजीबोग़रीब जड़ों से औषधि बना रहे हैं। साँप, मेढक और हिरण के मांस ज़मीन पर सुखाए जा रहे हैं। नाई उस्तरा लेकर, और मुंशी काग़ज़ और दवात लेकर बैठे हैं। मुंशी तांबे के सिक्के लेकर अनपढ़ों के लिए चिट्ठी लिख रहे हैं। एक भविष्यवक्ता बेंत की गठरी लेकर बैठा है, जिसमें हर बेंत पर एक अंक लिखा है। लोग आकर एक बेंत चुनते हैं, और वह अपने ग्रंथ का वह पन्ना खोलता है जिसमें उनका भविष्य लिखा है। उसके ठीक पीछे एक पट्टिका पर लिखा है- ज़िंदगी बहुत कीमती है। अपने जीवन में सावधानी बरतें। सदैव किसी दिव्य व्यक्ति से मार्गदर्शन लें। ख़ास कर जब आप समुद्र यात्रा पर जा रहे हों!’- झांग दाइ (Zhang Dai) के संस्मरण से, सत्रहवीं सदीचीन के इतिहास में दो चीजें बहुतायत में मिलती हैं। एक तो किताबें बहुत लिखी गयी, क्योंकि काग़ज़ की खोज जल्दी हो गयी। दूसरा यह कि यात्रा संस्मरण बहुत लिखे गए। दूसरे देशों के इतिहास को भी चीनी यात्रियों के संस्मरणों से देखा गया, जिसमें भारत में शामिल है। भले ही ह्वेन-सांग का लिखा आधा-अधूरा हो, विकृत हो, उसके अनुवाद ग़लत हुए हों या ह्वेन-सांग नामक कोई व्यक्ति ही न हो; लेकिन वह ह्वेन-सांग के नाम से लिख दिया गया, तो अब वह इतिहास का हिस्सा है। मार्को पोलो ने क़ैदखाने में बैठे-बैठे किसी दूसरे कैदी को कुछ कहानी सुनायी, उसने कुछ मसाला जोड़ कर लिख दिया, वह इतिहास बन गया। इसलिए इस विषय पर माथापच्ची करने का मतलब नहीं कि सही इतिहास क्या और ग़लत क्या। अगर कोई घटनाओं को दर्ज़ ही नहीं करता, तो वह सत्य होकर भी इतिहास के पन्नों में नहीं जाएगी। अगर दर्ज़ हो गयी तो हम उसे भले अविश्वसनीय और मिथ्या कहते रहें, वह इतिहास बन जाएगी। अब जैसे इसी कथन को लें- ‘मंगोलों के बाद चीन पर कभी भी लंबे समय तक पूर्ण विदेशी शासन नहीं हुआ’यह बात न सिर्फ़ चीनी बल्कि पश्चिमी इतिहासकार भी लिखते हैं। मैंने भी पहले लिखा है। लेकिन, यह कथन भ्रांतिपूर्ण है। इसलिए नहीं कि यूरोपीय शक्तियों ने चीन पर धौंस जमायी, या जापान ने हराया, बल्कि चीन का आखिरी राजवंश जिसने तीन सौ वर्षों तक शासन किया वही चीन की दीवाल फाँद कर आए थे!सत्रहवीं सदी के शुरुआत में जब डोंगलिन अकादमी के बुद्धिजीवियों ने सत्ता के खिलाफ़ विद्रोह शुरू किया, तो उन्हें पकड़ कर मृत्युदंड दे दिया गया। लगभग पूरी अकादमी ही साफ़ कर दी गयी। मगर उन्होंने जनता में अपना संदेश पहुँचा दिया था। पहले छोटे दुकानदारों ने शहरों में आंदोलन शुरू किए। फिर गाँवों में किसान उठ खड़े हुए। मिंग वंश की नींव हिल गयी।1635 ईसवी में ली जिचेंग नामक एक किसान के नेतृत्व में तीस हज़ार चीनियों ने राजधानी की ओर बढ़ना शुरू किया। वह एक-एक कर चीनी शहर जीतते जा रहे थे। हालाँकि वे अराजक थे, जो सरकारी संपत्ति जलाते हुए आगे बढ़ रहे थे। कैफेंग प्रांत में तो उन्होंने एक बाँध तोड़ दिया, जिसमें तीन लाख लोगों के डूब कर मर जाने का विवरण है। 1644 ई. में जब वह बीजिंग पहुँचे, मिंग वंश के आखिरी राजा फॉरबिडेन सिटी के बाहर एक पेड़ से लटके हुए मिले। उन्होंने आत्महत्या कर ली थी।ली जिचेंग ने उस जमाने का एक साम्यवादी भाषण दिया- ‘अब इस राज्य पर शाही शासन नहीं, हम गरीबों का राज होगा। कोई कर नहीं लगाया जाएगा। ज़मीन हर नागरिक को बराबर बाँट दी जाएगी’ऐसे अशांत माहौल में दो विदेशी शक्तियों ने चीन पर अपने जाल फेंकने शुरू किए थे। पहले पुर्तगालियों ने यह सोचा कि मिंग राजवंश को सैन्य सहयोग देकर धीरे-धीरे इसे अपना उपनिवेश बना लिया जाए। उन्होंने तोप और बारूद भिजवाए, जो चीन के लिए अपेक्षाकृत नयी चीज थी। ये गोला-बारूद युद्ध में भले काम आते किंतु इस जन-विद्रोह में तो नाकाम रहे। दूसरी विदेशी शक्ति चीन की दीवाल के उत्तर में थी। नुरहाची नामक एक सरदार ने जुरचेन, मंगोल और अन्य को मिला कर कुल आठ कबीलों का एक समूह बनाया। संभवतः वे तेंगरी या शामन आस्थाओं को मानते थे। कुछ स्रोत उन्हें बोधिसत्व मंजूश्री का अनुयायी मानते हैं। ऐसा भ्रम उनके नाम को लेकर संभव है। चीन की दीवाल फाँद कर अगली तीन सदियों तक चीन पर अपना शासन स्थापित करने वाले ये लोग थे- मंचू।
