After closed for two months, classes for grade IX to XII will resume from August 10 onwards.

All classes IX through XII in the state will return at their regular times on August 10 according to a statement made on August 7 by the Directorate of Education Schools of Manipur.

The Directorate instructed all Zonal Education Officers to alert those affected and take the appropriate steps in this regard. ”In continuation of order of even number dated 3rd July 2023 issued for opening of schools for classes I to VIII, all schools for classes IX to XII” in the state will resume from 10th of August, 2023 (Thursday) onwards,” the Directorate said an official notification.

In Manipur, there are 1229 schools with grades from IX to XII that are operated by various managements, according to the announcement.

The Directorate further stated that the 28 schools would not be affected by the order for resumption because they are currently participating in relief efforts.

Originally, the Directorate of Education planned to resume regular classes in all of the state’s schools on June 21. However, that date was postponed until July 1, 2023, and finally, regular classes for grades 1 to 8 resumed in the state on July 5, 2023.

All the school in Manipur has been closed from May 2023 onwards after the announcement of summer vacation and it was last extended till July 19,2023.

What is happening in Manipur?

Since May 3, Meitei and Kuki residents of communities in Manipur have reportedly committed horrendous acts of violence, including reported rapes, burnings, and decapitations. This awful violence is reportedly being prompted by the state government’s efforts to offer benefits and jobs formerly only available to Kukis to Meiteis. At least 150 people have died in violence that is happening between the Meitei and Kuki ethnic groups that have gripped the Myanmar-bordering state of Manipur in north-eastern India.

Following a Kuki-led tribal solidarity march in ten of the state’s sixteen districts, violence erupted in Churachandpur, a town just south of the state capital Imphal, on May 3. Clashes extended throughout Manipur as the Meitei organized counterprotests and blockades. Women were part of some of the mobs. They occasionally stopped soldiers from intervening in order to protect Meitei attackers.

Over 12,000 people have fled into the neighboring Mizoram state, while thousands have been hurt and more than 60,000 people have been displaced as a result of the violence. Numerous homes, churches, and cars have been vandalized, and thousands of firearms have been taken from government arsenals. Attacks such as arson and others go on unabated.

Numerous serious incidents of sexual abuse against Kuki women by Meitei men, militias, and militants provide as proof that sexual violence has been used as a weapon in the ethnic conflict.

In total, the violence over the past three months has resulted in at least 150 fatalities and at least 60,000 displaced individuals. According to some reports, there were more than 180 fatalities.
