Being the first Indian to take home a gold medal from the Paralympics makes Petkar special. At the Heidelberg, Germany, Summer Paralympics in 1972, he accomplished a spectacular achievement. In the 50-meter freestyle swimming competition, Petkar competed and won the gold medal, becoming a pioneer and an inspiration for the Indian Paralympic movement. He also took part in other competitions at the same Paralympics, including the 200-meter individual medley, 50-meter backstroke, and 100-meter freestyle. The achievement of Murlikant Petkar not only raised awareness of para-sports in India but also sparked the growth of handicap sports in that nation.
