G20 Summit 2023 : World leaders pay respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, including PM Modi, Joe Biden, and Rishi Sunak

On September 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, G20 leaders, and other head of international organizations paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

Rishi Sunak, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Azali Assoumani, the president of the African Union (AU), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president of Nigeria, Spain’s Vice-President Nadia Calvino, and Raquel Buenrostro Sánchez, the minister of economy of the United Mexican States, all paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by laying wreaths.

With a Khadi shawl featuring a cutout of Gandhi Ashram as the background, PM Modi welcomed the leaders. The leaders will then depart for the third session of the G20 summit, dubbed “One Future,” at Bharat Mandapam after planting tree saplings at Rajghat.

As the leaders arrived, images from Rajghat showed the site being adorned with vibrant flowers. In preparation for the G20 Summit, security has also been stepped up in some areas of the national capital.

Additionally, the necessary arrangements were made in order to maintain traffic flow. Traffic Alert: Due to the implementation of Controlled Zone 2, buses will not run on the Ring Road between the ISBT Kashmiri Gate and Sarai Kale Khan. The Delhi Traffic Police tweeted that buses would run along the remaining section of the Ring Road as well as the other roads leading out of Delhi.

The slogan for this year’s G20 Summit, which is being hosted by India, is “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which translates to “One Earth One Family One Future.” Notably, on December 1 of last year, India took over as G20 Presidency.

Here is the G20 summit’s schedule.

The leaders of the G20 met at Raj Ghat in Delhi to lay wreaths at Mahatma Gandhi’s Samadhi to begin the second day of the summit. At the wreath-laying ceremony, a musical tribute was also performed, incorporating Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite hymns.

The third session of the G20 summit, titled “One Future,” will take place in Bharat Mandapam after a tree-planting ceremony at the South Plaza, which will be attended by the leaders. On the second day of the summit, a G20 exhibition will be held for the spouses of world leaders.

PM Modi announced on Saturday that the leaders of G20 countries have reached a consensus on New Delhi G20 Leaders Declaration. The announcement is significant as the deliberations on the Delhi declaration were clouded by the different positions on Russia-Ukraine war.

  1. As Leaders of G20, the premier global forum for international economic cooperation, we resolve to act in concrete ways through partnerships. We commit to:
  2.  Accelerate strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth.
  3. Accelerate the full and effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  4. Improve access to medical countermeasures and facilitate more supplies and production capacities in developing countries to prepare better for future health emergencies.
  5. Promote resilient growth by urgently and effectively addressing debt vulnerabilities in developing countries.
