Resuming their iconic roles as Fateh and Pooja, Dosanjh and Bajwa serve up a healthy dose of nostalgia topped with endearing romance and sizzling chemistry.
The movie, which is divided into two parts—the pre-interval “Punjab phase” and the post-interval “London phase,” depicts the marriage of convenience between Fateh and Pooja. Jasmine Bajwa, who portrays Daisy, a woman charged with fraud, adds tadka to an already complex equation. Breakdowns started to show between Fateh and Pooja as Daisy and he grew closer.
Taking about the Performances
Bajwa and Diljit are both entertaining to watch, but Diljit predominantly steals the show from Bajwa—not because of Bajwa’s acting prowess, but rather because of the screenplay that allows Dosanjh more screen time. At the police station, the two spar and trade jabs; a Tom and Jerry-like dynamic ensues in which the senior cop, Bajwa, causes issues for her junior, Dosanjh.
The heartthrob of the internet, Diljit, is having an amazing year. His most recent appearance was on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show. Even if a lot of Dosanjh’s comedy is on the verge of offensive—think jokes about someone’s weight, skin colour, and lack of education—it is difficult not to enjoy him as Fateh.
Additionally, too stereotypical Punjabi characters seem to be lifted directly from Santa-Banta jokes. Ironically, a movie aimed towards Punjabis features a lot of prejudices that are directed towards the exact people it is supposed to be serving. Punchlines in the jokes aim for the easiest targets. Occasionally, the humour is quite absurd, of course.
The movie also makes some remark on the aspirations of Punjabis to immigrate, the unemployment rate among young people, and the numerous difficulties that police officers encounter. Since J&J is a romance movie, I would have enjoyed the movie much more if the film’s subtly humorous messages were backed up by strong comedic moments and the movie was 3 out of 5 stars for as we know it was a sequel of the previous movie but we as an audience has changed a lot.
