In his recent Mann Ki Baat address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a strong warning against the “digital arrest” scam, which is emerging as a serious threat to public safety. He explained that these scams often involve fraudsters posing as officials from various government departments, such as the police, CBI, or RBI, using tactics designed to intimidate victims. These scammers typically collect personal information, apply psychological pressure, and create urgency to manipulate victims into paying large sums of money.
Modi reassured listeners that no genuine government agency would make threats or demand money over the phone and urged people to stay calm and vigilant if they receive such calls. He mentioned that government agencies and law enforcement are actively working to dismantle these fraudulent networks, with initiatives led by the National Cyber Coordination Centre. He also encouraged citizens to help raise awareness within their communities and advised educational institutions to educate students about cyber fraud, aiming for a collective effort to counter this threat.
This advisory by PM Modi is part of a broader government initiative to strengthen public awareness and cybersecurity measures to prevent online frauds that have become increasingly sophisticated and widespread. He highlighted that avoiding panic and seeking official verification before acting can protect individuals from falling victim to such scams.
