Stakeholders Raise Serious Concerns Over Recognition of ‘India Taekwondo’ by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports

Ranchi, August 20 — A broad and growing group of Indian Taekwondo stakeholders — including former international athletes, senior coaches, experienced officials, and recognized state associations — have formally raised their concerns regarding the ongoing recognition of India Taekwondo (IT) by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS).

These concerns focus on irregularities regarding IT’s legal status, administrative functioning, and overall compliance with the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011.

Despite consistent national efforts to improve sports governance, stakeholders allege that India Taekwondo was granted recognition without meeting the minimum legal and democratic standards required for a National Sports Federation. Notably, no fair and transparent elections were held prior to recognition, and to date, India Taekwondo has failed to produce key legal documentation establishing its legitimacy.

“It’s honestly disheartening,” said Mr. Anil Kumar, a senior taekwondo stakeholder. “This is a sport with deep grassroots support across India, and yet it’s being dragged down by a system that’s neither transparent nor legally sound. Our athletes deserve better—they need a federation that actually follows the rules and respects every genuine stakeholder.”

He added, “What’s really surprising is how MYAS suddenly gave recognition to India Taekwondo (IT) as a National Sports Federation after five years of doing nothing—and without even collecting proper documents. They just went off letters from World Taekwondo and ATU. Honestly, it leaves us wondering, what’s really going on?Has our sports ministry really surrendered control to foreign bodies? What happened to the National Sports Code of India?”

“Why has the Hon’ble Sports Minister remained silent on this fundamental question of due process and national autonomy? he concluded.”

India Taekwondo faces a long list of allegations, but the most serious issues are:

  • Violation of the National Sports Code, 2011: India Taekwondo has failed to follow basic requirements like fair elections and transparency, as mandated by the Sports Code.
  • Arbitrary derecognition of genuine state associations: Legitimate state bodies were removed without due process or valid reasons, silencing key voices and undermining fair representation.
  • Engineered and opaque 2023 election: The electoral college was manipulated to ensure an uncontested outcome, with no independent observers from MYAS or IOA. The process was entirely controlled by Mr. Namdev Shirgaonkar.
  • False claims of registration, despite ongoing complaints and contradictory evidence.
  • Submission of false documents to international bodies to gain personal legitimacy and recognition.

A Call for Accountability

Given the evidence and ongoing legal scrutiny, stakeholders now respectfully ask the Honorable Minister:

Why has the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports granted and is continuing recognition to India Taekwondo, whose legality is doubtful and under active judicial review? Whose registration documents remain undisclosed?

This whole issue, stands in direct contradiction to the governance model and spirit consistently promoted by our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, whose vision emphasizes transparency, legality, and inclusive development across all sectors — including sports.

Thus, We respectfully urge the honorable Minister, in the interest of national pride and the Olympic movement in India, to act and to review this matter with fairness and urgency, in the larger interest of sport, accountability, and public trust.
