Michigan church attack leaves one dead, several injured amid fire and shooting

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A mass shooting and fire at a Mormon church in Michigan on Sunday morning left at least one worshipper dead and several others wounded, authorities announced, as emergency crews continued to sift through the wreckage for additional victims.

The assault unfolded at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, roughly 50 to 60 miles north of Detroit. Police say a 40-year-old man drove his vehicle through the church’s front doors before stepping out and opening fire on congregants attending the Sunday service.

After the shooting began, the suspect is believed to have deliberately set the building ablaze. Flames and smoke were visible for hours as firefighters battled the blaze and attempted to secure the interior.

Two responding police officers pursued the shooter and exchanged gunfire with him. The suspect was killed in the confrontation, ending the threat. Authorities said there is no longer an ongoing danger to the public.

At least nine others were wounded, with some in critical condition. Ten victims were reported to have been transported to local hospitals. Police warned that more victims could yet be discovered once the fire-damaged portions are fully accessed.

Authorities have begun combing through the suspect’s residence in nearby Burton and have dispatched over 100 FBI agents to assist in the investigation, including agencies such as ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives). Officials haven’t yet disclosed a motive or confirmed whether the church was directly targeted in advance.

The tragedy comes one day after the death of Russell M. Nelson, the longtime president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, adding an extra pall of grief to the Church community.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement condemning the violence, saying “my heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community” and affirming respect for places of worship as spaces that should be safe and sacred. Other national figures, including former President Donald Trump, expressed condolences and called for renewed efforts to curb violence in places of worship.

In Grand Blanc, residents have been asked to avoid the area while investigators and first responders work. A reunification site has been established for families of worshippers to receive updates and support.

As authorities continue to probe motives and casualty counts, the community faces a difficult recovery. Investigators say it could take time to fully unravel what drove this act of violence at what should have been a sanctuary.
