India Claim They Were Denied Asia Cup Trophy After Win Over Pakistan

In a dramatic and unprecedented turn of events following India’s thrilling victory over Pakistan in the 2025 Asia Cup final, the Indian team has publicly claimed they were denied the opportunity to lift the trophy.

The final, held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, saw India win by five wickets thanks to a stellar unbeaten 69 from Tilak Varma and a sensational late surge after Pakistan collapsed to 146 all out.

However, what should have been a moment of celebration was marred by controversy. During the post-match presentation ceremony, Indian players refused to accept the trophy or medals from Mohsin Naqvi, who serves as both the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President and Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) — and is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister.

The awards ceremony was delayed by more than an hour and abruptly ended before the trophy handover could take place. Officials reportedly removed the trophy from display and withdrew it from the presentation stage entirely.

At a press conference, India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed disbelief at the events, saying, “This is one thing which I have never seen … that a champion team is denied a trophy, and that too a hard-earned one.” He stood firm that his squad deserved to hoist the cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed they had earlier requested that an alternate official — Emirates Cricket Board Vice-Chairman Khalid Al Zarooni — present the trophy, but that request was “denied.” The BCCI further stated their intention to file a formal protest at the upcoming ICC meeting, demanding that the trophy and medals be rightfully handed over to the Indian players.

Critics in Pakistan, including former captain Shoaib Malik, have condemned India’s refusal as a breach of cricketing etiquette. Malik warned the decision could “haunt” Indian cricket in the future. Pakistan’s captain Salman Agha added that India’s behavior amounted to “disrespect to cricket.”

In lieu of a physical trophy, India’s players staged their own celebration — raising an “imaginary trophy” on the field and sharing jovial images and memes online, including playful posts by spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who mocked the situation by posing with a coffee mug as a stand-in trophy.

In the shadow of one of India-Pakistan cricket’s most contentious finals, the debate now moves off the field: who truly won the night, and will the trophy ever find its way into India’s hands?
