Appeal to Startups: Move Beyond Big Cities, Choose Tier-2 and Tier-3 Locations

A growing concern across India is the rising population and pollution in big cities. The major metros are slowly turning into gas chambers — making life there more difficult by the day. In this situation, it’s time for Indian startups to think differently.

Many entrepreneurs are being urged to set up their companies in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where life is more balanced and opportunities are growing rapidly.

Here are some key benefits of running a company in smaller cities:

  1. Lower startup cost – Setting up a business in smaller cities is far more affordable.
  2. Affordable workforce – Skilled and semi-skilled workers are available at reasonable salaries.
  3. No traffic issues – Most Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are compact (10–20 km across). You can travel from one end to another in about 30 minutes.
  4. Better work-life balance – Employees can maintain a healthy personal and professional life.
  5. Easy administration – Local authorities and service providers are more cooperative and accessible.
  6. Lower housing and office rent – Both company owners and employees get affordable living and working spaces.
  7. Closer to family – Employees prefer to live with their parents in their hometowns, saving money and spending more time with family while staying loyal to the company.
  8. Quick availability of staff – In emergencies, staff can reach the office quickly.
  9. Strong local network – In smaller cities, people know each other, making it easier to find reliable references and new hires.
  10. Faster response during emergencies – Less traffic means reaching home, school, or hospital quickly during family emergencies.
  11. Better hospitality for clients – The entire team can host and show clients around after work, offering a personal touch.
  12. Lower cost of living – Daily expenses are significantly lower compared to big cities.
  13. Strong social connections – Districts are close to each other; you can visit relatives after office hours and return the next morning.
  14. Local respect and recognition – Running a business in a small city brings prestige and community support.
  15. No Serious Issues on Population , Pollution , Water, Transportation , no Language issues like Banglore or Maharastra .
  16. People are friendly Compared to Metro and Big cities
  17. Crime Rates are less compared to Metro and Big Cities
  18. expense on education and medical treatment are less
  19. In small cities, people take fewer leaves. When family and parents live together, there’s hardly any need to take time off. For small personal tasks, you can take an hour’s break from the office, while in metro cities, you might need a full day’s leave for the same work.
  20. In small towns, if an employee falls sick or faces any tragedy, the entire office stands by their side — something that’s rarely seen in big cities

Government Support Needed:
The government should actively promote and support businesses that choose to set up in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Encouraging this move will help reduce the pressure on major cities and create balanced growth across the country.
