Neeraj Pandey’s Web Series Taskari Inspired by Real-Life Customs Officer Sumit Sarkar

A recently released web series on Netflix has drawn widespread attention for its gripping portrayal of smuggling networks operating across India. Titled Taskari, the series is inspired by the real-life experiences of senior customs officer Sumit Sarkar and has been directed by acclaimed filmmaker Neeraj Pandey.

The web series delves into the dark and complex world of organized smuggling, exposing how illegal trade operates through airports and international routes. At its core lies the story of Sumit Sarkar, a customs officer who has been posted at Mumbai International Airport for several years. During his long tenure, Sarkar handled numerous high-risk cases related to gold, narcotics, and other forms of contraband, gaining first-hand insight into the methods used by smugglers.

Drawing from these real experiences, Sumit Sarkar began working on the story nearly six years ago. His aim was to present an authentic and realistic account of the challenges faced by enforcement agencies in tackling smuggling syndicates. The narrative eventually caught the attention of Neeraj Pandey, known for his realistic and hard-hitting storytelling. Impressed by the depth and authenticity of the material, Pandey decided to adapt it into a web series.

After years of research, scripting, and development, Taskari finally took shape as a full-fledged Netflix production. The series features actor Emraan Hashmi in the lead role, portraying a determined officer navigating moral dilemmas, professional pressure, and the constant threat posed by organized crime.

Speaking to jharkhandweekly.com, author Sumit Sarkar said that the journey from concept to screen was long and demanding. “I worked on this story for almost six years. Every incident in the series is rooted in reality. I wanted people to understand how smuggling actually works and how difficult it is to stop,” he said.

With its realistic treatment, strong performances, and a storyline grounded in real events, Taskari is being seen as another significant addition to Neeraj Pandey’s repertoire of content-driven thrillers.
