आमतौर पर केसरिया पलाश भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप और दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया में पाया जाता है लेकिन पीले पलाश के फूल बहुत कम देखने को मिलते हैं। ऐसा ही एक पेड़ मुसाबनी-घाटसिला मार्ग पर कुमिरमुरी गांव की ढलान पर देखा गया है। जुवान मुर्मू (ग्रामीण) ने कहा, “मुझे नहीं पता कि पेड़ कितना पुराना है, लेकिन पिछले तीन सालों से उस पर पीले फूल खिल रहे हैं।” पलाश को टेसू, खाकरा, रक्तपुष्प, ब्रह्मकलश, किंशुक आदि कई नामों से जाना जाता है।

इसका वानस्पतिक नाम बुटिया मोनोस्पर्मा है और यह झारखंड का राजकीय पुष्प है। झारखंड के जंगलों में इन दिनों पलाश के फूल देखने को मिल रहे हैं. आदिवासी संस्कृति में इन फूलों का बड़ा महत्व है। इस समय जो भी इन फूलों को देखता है या इन रास्तों से गुजरता है वह यहां रहना चाहता है। क्योंकि इन्हें देखकर ऐसा लगता है मानो धरती पर इससे खूबसूरत कुछ और हो ही नहीं सकता। ये फूल शुरू होते ही दिखने लगते हैं। आदिवासी लड़कियां इन फूलों को अपने जोड़े में लगाकर सजाती हैं। सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमों में इस फूल का विशेष महत्व होता है। परंपरा यह है कि महिलाएं इसे तब तक अपने स्थान पर नहीं रखती हैं जब तक कि उस स्थान पर स्पष्ट रूप से पलाश के फूल की पूजा न हो जाए। पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों में प्रमुखता से पाए जाने वाले केसरिया पलाश के फूलों से होली के रंग बनाए जाते हैं। ग्रामीण पलाश के पत्ते, डंठल, छाल, फली, फूल और जड़ों का उपयोग विभिन्न रोगों के उपचार के लिए करते हैं। प्राचीन काल से इसकी पत्तियों का उपयोग थाली और कटोरी बनाने में किया जाता रहा है।
