NCST Probes Alleged Police Excess in Jharkhand Amid Claims of Bangladeshi Infiltration and Demographic Changes

Tensions are rising in Jharkhand, particularly in the Santhal Pargana region, over allegations of demographic changes caused by Bangladeshi infiltration. The controversy intensified after Godda MP Dr. Nishikant Dubey brought the issue to the Lok Sabha’s attention. The ruling party in Jharkhand has dismissed these allegations as unfounded, sparking a political confrontation.

In a recent statement on X, Dubey accused the Jharkhand Police of using excessive force against tribal youths in Pakur district to suppress protests against alleged “love jihad” and “land jihad” targeting the tribal community.

He stated that the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has taken note of the incident, suggesting that their involvement could mitigate the alleged repression by the state government.

The NCST has formally sought a response from the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Pakur, citing a report from “The Hindu” (Patna edition) dated July 28, 2024, which detailed injuries to 11 tribal students in a clash with police.

The commission, invoking its powers under Article 338A of the Indian Constitution, has requested detailed information on the actions taken regarding these allegations.

The SP has been given three days to respond, with a warning that failure to do so could lead to the use of civil court powers to compel a personal appearance or representation before the commission.

Meanwhile, Babulal Marandi, the BJP’s state president, has called on the Hemant Soren-led government to take decisive action against the issue of Bangladeshi infiltration.
