Hemant Soren Government to Rename Daltonganj Railway Station

The Hemant Soren government has decided to change the British-era name of the Daltonganj railway station in Jharkhand.

Historical Background

The town was named Daltonganj during the British Raj after Colonel Edward Tuite Dalton, an Irish anthropologist and the commissioner of Chota Nagpur in 1861. In 2004, the Jharkhand state government changed the town’s name to Medininagar, after Raja Medini Ray of the ancient Chero dynasty.

Current Status

Despite the name change of the town, the railway station still retains the name Daltonganj. The town is administered by the Medininagar Municipal Corporation, established on May 30, 2015. Medininagar, formerly known as Daltonganj, serves as the headquarters of Palamu division, Palamu district, and is situated on the banks of the North Koel River.

Official Announcement

A press release from the state secretariat announced that the Soren government has approved a proposal to rename the Daltonganj railway station to Medininagar railway station. This proposal will be sent to the Union Home Ministry and the Railway Ministry for approval.

By renaming the railway station, the Jharkhand government aims to align the station’s name with the town’s current identity and honor its historical heritage.
