India Launches 5-Year Startup Visa to Attract Global Entrepreneurs Amid H-1B Visa Tensions

In a major policy move, the Government of India has announced a new 5-year Startup Visa program aimed at attracting foreign entrepreneurs and investors, especially in the wake of recent U.S. restrictions and increased fees on H-1B visas. The initiative is designed to position India as a global innovation hub and provide a welcoming environment for startups seeking to establish or expand their operations in the country.

The announcement comes shortly after the United States imposed stricter conditions and a hefty annual fee on H-1B visas — a move that has caused widespread concern among tech professionals and international businesses. Indian officials say the Startup Visa program is a “strategic opportunity” to turn global uncertainty into an advantage for India’s growing digital economy.

Under the new policy, eligible foreign founders and investors will be granted a 5-year multiple-entry visa, allowing them to set up offices, hire local talent, and collaborate with Indian partners without bureaucratic hurdles. The government also plans to establish dedicated startup zones in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Gurugram, offering tax incentives, simplified compliance, and funding support.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the new visa is part of India’s broader “Startup India 2.0” initiative, which seeks to attract high-value innovation and investment from around the world. “India has one of the fastest-growing startup ecosystems globally. With this long-term visa, we’re opening our doors wider for entrepreneurs who see India as the next global growth frontier,” said an official statement.

Industry experts have welcomed the move, calling it a game-changer in the global startup landscape. Tech analysts believe this could draw startups from the U.S., Europe, and Southeast Asia — especially those affected by tightening immigration norms in Western economies.

“India’s combination of skilled workforce, large consumer market, and now a supportive visa regime makes it a natural destination for global innovation,” said Rajeev Menon, a startup ecosystem consultant based in Bengaluru.

The new visa policy is expected to be rolled out by early 2026, with an online application system to streamline approvals. If successful, it could mark a major shift in global entrepreneurial migration — turning India into a preferred base for startups worldwide.
