‘Our history and geography connect India and ASEAN’, says PM Modi in Indonesia ASEAN Summit 2023

Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to ASEAN as the “central pillar” of the nation’s Act East Policy and added that India fully supports the organization’s prominence and vision on the Indo-Pacific.

PM Modi referred to the twenty-first century as Asia’s century and emphasized the need for everyone to work for a post-Covid world order based on rules. At the ASEAN-India meeting in Jakarta, Modi stated that “the advancement of a free and open Indo-Pacific and elevating the Voice of Global South is in the common interest of all.”

In his statement, he said, “Our partnership is entering its fourth decade. Our history and geography connect India and ASEAN. Along with shared values, regional unity, peace, prosperity, and a shared belief in a multipolar world also binds us together.”

“ASEAN is the central pillar of India’s Act East Policy. India fully supports ASEAN centrality and ASEAN’s outlook on the Indo-Pacific. ASEAN holds a prominent place in India’s Indo-Pacific initiative. Last year, we celebrated the India-ASEAN Friendship Year and elevated our relationship to a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’,” he said.

Modi’s 12-point strategy for enhancing Asean-India collaboration spans topics including connectivity, digital public infrastructure (DPI), and counterterrorism. It plans to build commercial ties between India, Southeast Asia, West Asia, and Europe as well as multimodal connectivity.

The Prime Minister said, “Today, even in a climate of global uncertainties, there is continuous progress in every field in their mutual cooperation.”

“This is evidence of the tenacity and resiliency of our bond. “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth” is the focus of this year’s ASEAN Summit. Because the ASEAN region is so important to the advancement of the world, everyone’s voice is heard here, and ASEAN is the epicenter of growth, he said.

The theme of India’s G-20 Presidency is “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which means “one earth, one family, one future,” he remarked.

Asia’s century is the twenty-first century. This century is ours. Building a rule-based post-Covid world order and endeavors by all for human welfare are required for this, he stated.

“The progress of a free and open Indo-Pacific and elevating the Voice of Global South is in the common interest of all. I believe that today’s discussions will lead to new resolutions for strengthening the future of India and the ASEAN region,” the Prime Minister said.

In order to attend the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN-India Summit, the Prime Minister is in Indonesia. PM Modi will attend the 18th East Asia Summit after the ASEAN-India Summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora upon reaching Indonesia’s Jakarta early on Thursday morning for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean)-India summit.

He arrived in Jakarta early to participate in the summit, and he will return to Delhi late Thursday night to participate in a bilateral meeting between India and the United States before the weekend G20 conference.
