Surat Building Collapse: Current Situation
Around 3 PM on Saturday, a building in the Sachin area of Surat, Gujarat, collapsed, trapping several residents under the debris. Rescue operations are being conducted by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the fire department, according to the police.
As of Sunday, police reported that seven bodies had been recovered from the rubble, with some people still trapped. Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot, who is overseeing the rescue efforts, noted that rescuers initially heard the voices of trapped individuals. A woman was successfully rescued from the debris.
Of the 30 flats in the building, four to five were occupied at the time of the collapse, with the remaining units empty. Reports indicate that many occupants were at work, while those sleeping were trapped. The building was constructed in 2016-17.
In a separate incident in Gujarat earlier this year, four workers were injured when a section of an under-construction medical college building in Morbi town collapsed in March. Another worker was rescued after being trapped for seven hours. This incident occurred around 8 PM on March 9 while workers were filling the roof on the first floor of the new building.
