IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for Jharkhand

Weather Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for Jharkhand. According to Abhishek Anand, in charge at Ranchi Meteorological Center, significant rainfall is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the monsoon.

Rainfall Prediction

Heavy rainfall is predicted in some parts of Jharkhand over the next two days. The IMD informed that intermittent rain has been occurring at various locations since the morning. Southern and eastern regions are likely to experience heavy downpours.

Impact on Rainfall Deficit

Recent rains have reduced the annual rainfall deficit to 19 percent, which is considered normal by the IMD. Dhanbad and Ranchi have recorded surplus rainfalls of five percent and one percent, respectively. However, three districts still have 40 percent less rainfall than usual, with Pakur experiencing the least at 48 percent.

Agricultural Impact

The recent heavy rains have accelerated the sowing process in the state. According to the state agriculture department’s sowing report, 6.87 lakh hectares or 38.20 percent of arable land have been planted with paddy, against a target of 18 lakh hectares. By July 26, the paddy sowing figure was only 13.53 percent.

Kharif Crops

As of August 5, 16.21 lakh hectares or 57.36 percent of the targeted 28.27 lakh hectares of arable land have been sown with Kharif crops.

The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in Jharkhand over the next two days, prompting an alert. The rains are expected to reduce the state’s annual rainfall deficit and accelerate agricultural activities, particularly paddy sowing.
